Magnificent deserts cover about 20% of the Earth’s surface; in Egypt 85% of the country is filled with these gentle and staggering, pristine sand dunes. Deserts are unforgiving environments, yet they are also tranquil and starkly beautiful.  Ancient caravans, beginning before the pharaohs ruled Egypt, have traversed such deserts, linking African and Mediterranean commerce together.  Today, desert safaris open up these isolated environments, allowing visitors to see places and unusual geological features that they have never seen before: 15 m tall chalk white inselbergs and mountains of crystal that have stood for 100s of millions of years; petrified sea shells and coral from oceans that dried up about 150 million years ago; pre-historic petroglyphs and ancient tools made up to 400,000 years ago; and, above all, the ultimate desert absence of sound, as one sits around a campfire and gazes at the blanket of millions of stars overhead on an isolated desert night.  Egyptian Western and White Desert safaris are an experience that will last the traveler a lifetime

We, at the Bedouin Castle/Bahariya Tours, provide tours to all of Egypt’s oases and 4x4, camel, and walking safaris throughout all of Egypt’s deserts: the Great Sand Sea, the White and Black deserts, Djara cave, the Wadi Hitan, the Gilf Kebir, and along all of the ancient caravan routes that connected Egypt with the heart of Africa, Tripoli, and the Nile and Mediterranean sea.  Our guides are experienced Bedouins who have learned desert navigation from their fathers and grandfathers – and who love to take adventurous guests into these starkly beautiful areas, on exhilarating desert safaris, over sand dunes sometimes rising almost 90 m tall. We even provide sand boards (upon request) for those who wish to take a thrilling  ‘sail’ down these tall dunes.

Our campsites are done in the traditional Bedouin style, with brightly-designed windbreaks, carpets, and traditional Bedouin tents.  We use Bedouin recipes daily, such as tasty fire-barbequed chicken, lamb slow-cooked in an ‘oven’ under the sand.  Our longer safaris make fresh bread daily in this manner as well. We also stop at natural hot and cold springs for bathing and relaxation, as well as to inspect abandoned temples and towns, and for scenic photo opportunity
